This article helps destroy the myths surrounding hypnosis and explains
in simple terms, what hypnosis is all about.
Hypnosis is a broad term used to describe a set of tools or methods for
altering the state of consciousness in someone. (what does "state
of consciousness" mean?)
The hypnotic or trance state is something that we can all find ourselves
in, quite naturally. (give examples, when it happens, what it
feels like, etc.)
An hypnotist helps the subject enter an hypnotic or trance state by
providing biofeedback. (what exactly is meant by biofeedback?)
The hypnotist can guide the subject into a
relaxed and altered state of consciousness by monitoring the subject's current
state and providing feedback - for instance, by way of tone and rhythm of
vocal suggestions.
Hypnosis can be thought of as the amplification of responses and
experience. (give examples.)
Another way of describing hypnosis, is to define what it is not.
Hypnosis is not a magical or mystical act. It is not a particular
thing, object or procedure. Hypnosis isn't a way
to control a person. It is in fact a way of giving control back to the
person, by giving them valuable feedback which they would not ordinarily have
access to.
